What exactly is the “quick”, and why is it important?

Your dog’s toenail consists of two parts: the nail itself and, the quick.

The quick is the soft pink flesh below the growing part of the toenail that provides the blood supply to the nail. It’s important when clipping a dog’s nails to avoid this area, as it is quite sensitive and will bleed.

If you happen to cut the quick, stop the bleeding immediately and use a nail cauterizer or Kwik Stop® Styptic Powder or Kwik® Stop Styptic Pads, which both have Benzocaine® to block pain while they effectively control minor bleeding.
